Kirby review

It’s safe to say that there are many different content management systems out there. Each one claims to be an effective tool for you to use, but sorting through them to find what’s best for you can be tricky.

One CMS that stands out is Kirby. It may not have anything to do with a certain pink video game character, but Kirby can be an effective content management system that you could benefit from using. Let’s take a look at it and see what it offers.

The Benefits of Flat-File CMS

One of the first things you need to know about Kirby is that it is a flat-file content management system (CMS) instead of a normal database driven CMS. If you’re not sure of the difference, I’ll explain.

When you use a database content management system like WordPress, all the information you have in your website is stored in a database. This means that you have to query the database for content, plugin settings etc. With a flat file CMS as there is no database to query on page load which straight away means a performance boost and a positive factor for SEO rankings along with customer experience. A flat file CMS stores the data in a series of files and folders I personally like this as it makes the website fast, lightweight and secure.

Security and Speed

That flat-file format of Kirby is a big part of the security - this design contributes to a more secure website. Hackers often target the database layer when trying to access sites. You have instantly reduced your website security risks.

In terms of speed, Kirby is fast. As mentioned, no database so page speed is improved. Also as it is designed and built as a CMS from the ground up alot of the functionality you expect in a CMS is built into Kirby. With a platform like WordPress you have to install a lot of plugins to achieve a basic level of functionality which in turns comes at a performance and security risk.

Easy to Use

The admin panel of Kirby is really simple to use and easy for beginner and non-technical content editors to pick up. It is minimal and functional and does not overwhelm the users with options.

You can take a look at the admin panel here to really see how simple and intuitive it looks.

Well-Built All Around

Kirby could be a good content management system for your website. It has a lot of strengths, and it is easy to see how something like this could be effectively marshalled to create a proper space for a business to flourish online.

Whilst there is a small licence one-off fee to pay for Kirby, that upfront cost will save you more than maintaining and wrangling with plugins updates and incompatible updates which can occur on other CMS. Also hosting costs can be drastically reduced, as it requires less server resources to run.
